Studio Liisa Steffa

Liisa Steffa’s unique jewelry pieces are a product of her extensive travels. Antique shops, bazaars and flea markets are the sources of the treasures and finds which bring the necklaces to life. The philosophy behind them is very clear: no two items are alike, every piece is unique and all the materials are genuine. From semi-precious stones, silver and bone to wood and coins, the vast majority of the elements are antique or old. And as to their form and color, African and Asian art and artifacts are an important inspiration.

Liisa Steffa, MA, studied art history, history and archeology at the University of Helsinki while completing a four-year course in art at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. She married in 1968 and moved to the US.

While in America, she began weaving rugs, wall hangings and other textiles and also learned to quilt. When the family returned to Finland in 1972, Liisa’s exhibition of quilts at the Helsinki Design Center was the first of its kind in the country.

For almost twenty years Liisa was the head editor of nonfiction at Otava Publishing Company in Helsinki. In addition, she has written, translated and edited innumerable books. But while her working career has been in publishing, antiques, art and world cultures have always interested her.

Liisa Steffa's jewerly can be purchased at the Desingmuseum shop in Helsinki.
